Best Time for Exterior Painting
More than likely with Spring around the corner, you’re thinking of the exterior of your house.

Spring is usually the time that our thoughts move outside and start seriously thinking about a refresh. You could
be thinking about painting your deck, doors, shutters, siding and trim. Yes, there’s a lot that can be
painted, but there’s absolutely no hurry. A good plan of attack when you can spend time outside, is to
get your gardening tasks completed first then worry about the painting.
When painting outside, the weather needs to be good consistently. Meaning no chance of frost
overnight. If need be, your plants can be covered or brought in overnight, but what you’ve painted can’t
be. If the weather is warm and sunny during the day, you may think that’s your cue to grab your paint
brush and get started. Don’t be tempted! Your hard work could be ruined if the temperature drops
below freezing. The dew that forms on the paint will ruin the new paint because it won’t have dried
properly. Because paint needs days to adhere, cure and dry evenly, the earliest you can paint outside is
if the temperature will be at least 10*C during the day and sunny for a stretch with no chance of hitting
0*C.
What if you want to paint in the summer? Again, keep your eye on the weather. If the weather is very
humid, the paint won’t cure properly because of the moisture in the air. If it’s hot and sunny chances are
that the paint will dry unevenly because the drying process will happen too quickly. If you really want to
paint in the summer, get outside early in the day and make sure the area is shady as the temperature
goes up.
